It's Vacation Time!

Americans are going everywhere from Hawaii to Florida to Europe Record numbers of Americans will be vacationing this year. Where they'll be going depends on what survey you look at.

You can find travelers flocking to Hawaii, Europe and Florida; single men going to Club-Med type and other all-inclusive resorts, and single women going on cruises. And just when you think that Americans are going back to nature, a survey shows they prefer cities.

The vast majority of Americans - over 80 percent - will travel by car, truck or camper to a destination less than 250 miles from home. Vacations are getting shorter and parents no longer take the kids on three-week summer vacations.

Experts are finding that people are taking much shorter trips throughout the year rather than one long vacation these days. The average trip will last six nights. About 50 percent of the summer-fall trips will total 500 miles or less round trip, 23 percent 500 to 1,000 miles and 26 percent more than 1,000 miles.

On the other hand, Hawaii, Europe and Florida emerged as the "hot" destinations in a trends survey taken by American Express Travel Related Services Co. The company takes seasonal surveys by sending a detailed questionnaire to agency managers, who in turn question their travel counselors.

Hawaii has always been the ideal destination simply because people like to go to an exotic destination that's still in the United States. They want excitement, but they also like the fact the people speak English, though that too appears to be changing.
