The National Sanctuary of Calipuy was established on January 8,
1981, through Law (D.S.) N 004-81-AA. It is located next to
the National Reserve of Calipuy, in the department of La Libertad,
province of Santiago de Chuco, with a surface of 4500 hectares.
This
sanctuary protects the puya or cahua (Puya Raimondi) which
flowers only once (This a process that lasts 09 months)
during this time we can see several humming birds around
it.
With
regard to animals living in the area, there are mammals
like the andean wolf (Pseudalopex culpaeus), the white tail
deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the vizcacha (Lagidium
peruanum), we con also find birds like the kiula (Tinamotis
pentlandi), the halcon - falcon - perdiguero (Falco femoralis),
the chinalinda or guarahuau (Phalcoboenus megalopterus)
and the andean parakeet (Bolborhynchus sp.). The main purpose
of this National Sanctuary is to protect the puya.
